Tarquin's The Seadog Navy Strength Gin is a Cornish navy strength gin bottled at 57% ABV. Distilled in a copper pot still, it takes the house's bold botanical style and pushes it into a more powerful register. The recipe includes juniper, coriander, cinnamon, liquorice, orris, angelica root, bitter almonds, cardamom, fresh oranges, grapefruit peel, violet leaves and fresh lemons. The result is intense, aromatic and coastal, with citrus and spice wrapped around a firm juniper core.
The nose opens with bold juniper, grapefruit, orange and lemon, followed by cardamom, cinnamon and a floral-green touch from violet leaves. Bitter almond and liquorice add roundness beneath the citrus, while angelica and orris keep the structure dry. On the palate, the 57% ABV gives immediate power, but the gin remains aromatic rather than blunt. Citrus leads the attack, juniper expands through the middle and spice adds warmth. The texture is full, with enough freshness to keep the strength lively.
For a gin and tonic, a herbal tonic with grapefruit and lightly singed rosemary is a strong match. Grapefruit extends the citrus oils, rosemary gives a coastal herbal lift and the tonic provides the dilution this strength needs. The gin is also well suited to a Martini or other spirit-forward cocktails when a powerful base is required. The finish is long, dry and warming, with juniper, citrus peel, violet leaf and spice returning together. It is a vivid navy strength gin with a distinctly Cornish personality.
