Bathtub Gin Cask-Aged Navy-Strength Description

Bathtub Gin Cask-Aged Navy-Strength is a powerful barrel-aged version of Ableforth's Bathtub Gin. It combines two defining elements of the range: the compound gin method associated with Bathtub Gin and a high-strength, oak-influenced profile bottled at 57% alcohol by volume. The base style is rooted in Bathtub Gin's infusion-led approach, where botanicals such as juniper, orange peel, coriander, cassia, cloves and cardamom are infused into a high-quality pot-still spirit rather than being used only as a light aromatic accent.

For this navy-strength cask-aged edition, the spirit is aged in small 50-litre octave whisky casks. The small size of these casks increases contact between the spirit and the wood, allowing the oak influence to appear with more intensity than it would in larger barrels. The goal is not to erase the gin identity, but to give the already spicy and citrus-led Bathtub profile more body, oak structure and depth. The result is a gin that sits between classic gin intensity, navy-strength concentration and the warmer register of cask maturation.

On the nose, Bathtub Gin Cask-Aged Navy-Strength opens with bold juniper, orange peel and warm spice. Clove, cassia and cardamom are immediately present, giving the aroma a dry, aromatic and almost baking-spice character. The cask ageing adds dry oak, creamy vanilla and a lightly toasted impression, while the citrus peel keeps the profile from becoming too heavy. The aromatic intensity is high, as expected from a gin bottled at navy strength.

On the palate, the attack is full, powerful and dry. Juniper and orange peel give the first structure, followed by coriander, cardamom, clove and cassia. The higher alcohol level carries the botanicals strongly across the palate, while the octave cask influence adds vanilla, wood spice and a fuller texture. The middle of the mouth is rich and warming, but still recognisably gin-led. The finish is long, intense and spicy, with lingering juniper, citrus oils, dry oak, cassia and a controlled cask sweetness.

This is not a gin that needs an overly sweet or delicate mixer. It works best when dilution is handled carefully, either in a robust gin and tonic with a clean premium tonic and a restrained orange garnish, or in stirred cocktails that benefit from strength and oak influence. It is particularly well suited to cocktails such as a Last Word, a Negroni or a Martinez-style serve, where the high proof, spice and cask character can add structure without losing the gin's botanical core.
