Gins to love!

Maral Sloe Gin is a Belgian sloe gin built on a bespoke craft gin base and fresh wild sloes. The underlying gin provides a classic juniper-led framework with citrus and herbal notes, which is then enriched by the maceration of whole sloe berries and a carefully measured addition of sugar. The aim is to capture the full character of the fruit while preserving the identity of the gin at the core.
The production process begins with a finished gin into which hand-picked wild sloes are immersed. The berries remain in contact with the spirit for an extended maceration period, described as three to four times longer than many traditional approaches. This prolonged contact allows the sloes to release not only their deep colour and tart juice, but also subtle almond-like aromas derived from the stones. Sugar is added in controlled quantities to balance the natural acidity and bitterness of the fruit without turning the result into a heavy liqueur.
On the nose, Maral Sloe Gin shows an immediate impression of ripe dark berries supported by a gentle backdrop of juniper. Notes reminiscent of plum and black cherry appear alongside discreet hints of almond and a light herbal freshness from the gin base. The aromatic profile is rich but remains precise, with the fruit clearly in the foreground.
On the palate, the attack is soft and rounded, with an initial sweetness that quickly gives way to the characteristic tang of sloe berries. The fruit brings flavours of red and dark berries, while the underlying gin contributes discreet citrus and botanical notes that keep the profile from becoming overly sweet. A suggestion of almond from the sloe stones adds an additional layer of complexity. The texture is smooth and coating, reflecting both the macerated fruit and the moderate sugar content.
The finish is long and gently warming, marked by lingering berry notes, a light herbal impression and a touch of spice from the gin base. A subtle dryness returns on the aftertaste, inviting another sip and underlining the balance between sweetness, fruit and bitterness.
Maral Sloe Gin can be enjoyed neat at cool room temperature or over ice, where the fruit character and almond notes are most clearly expressed. It also pairs well with tonic or sparkling water for a longer, refreshing drink, and can be used as a flavourful component in cocktails that call for a sloe gin base, such as a Sloe Gin Fizz or a simple mix with quality soda.
