June Royal Pear Cardamom Description

A liqueur built on a gin is what this is, and both halves of that description matter. The base is G'Vine, a French gin distilled from grape rather than grain, and pear and cardamom are laid over it, which produces something rounder and sweeter than a dry spirit and considerably more structured than a fruit liqueur.

The grape base is the reason the pear works. A grain spirit would have left the fruit sitting on top of it, whereas a vinous foundation meets the pear halfway and gives it somewhere to rest. Royal pear is the softer, sweeter kind, and it dominates the aroma with a fresh fruit character rather than a cooked one, which matters in a category where pear usually arrives as syrup. Cardamom is the counterweight, and the livelier half of the pairing. Its cool, camphorous, faintly citric spice arrives after the fruit and lifts the finish, stopping the sweetness from settling and giving the whole thing an aromatic close. Juniper is still present underneath both, quiet but sufficient to keep the connection to gin from being purely nominal. Round across the palate, soft and spiced at the end, and lighter than the sweetness would suggest.

A liqueur asks to be built into something rather than drunk on its own, and this one is generous about what it will accept. The producer's own June Pear Pool sets it against champagne and seasonal fruit, which suits the pear directly. Otherwise, soda water and plenty of ice make the simplest long drink, and tonic works if it is neutral. A slice of pear echoes the recipe; a crushed cardamom pod follows the spice. Avoid anything already sweet. Most gin liqueurs are a gin with sugar added; this one is a gin with a reason added. It ends fruity, round and gently spiced.

Using a single large ice cube minimizes dilution, preserving the gin's nuanced flavors. Lightly crushing the cardamom pod releases its essential oils, intensifying the spice aroma.
