Best enjoyed with Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water, garnished with Lemon peel and Rosemary sprig.
See the perfect serveLemon appears first on the nose of Portofino Dry Gin, followed by lavender and Mediterranean herbs. Rosemary, marjoram, sage, iris and rose contribute to this Italian gin, made from Italian wheat spirit and bottled at 43%. Its aromas combine fresh citrus, flowers and herbs, with a dry character that keeps those fragrant notes distinct.
Lemon gives the nose a bright opening, followed by lavender and a softer floral scent. Juniper adds resinous freshness, while rosemary and sage introduce a drier herbal impression. The palate develops that contrast: citrus provides the first lift, then the herbs become more apparent, with marjoram adding a gentle savoury nuance. The floral notes soften the mouthful without replacing its dry character, giving the transition from lemon to herbs a more delicate feel.
Production uses both copper-pot and vacuum distillation. The gin contains no added sugar, artificial flavours or preservatives, allowing the botanical flavours to retain their importance throughout the tasting. The finish brings back the herbs alongside a lingering citrus fragrance, with the floral notes quieter than on the nose. The balance is particularly appealing when the lemon, lavender and greener aromas remain easy to distinguish from one another.
A Mediterranean tonic is a suitable match for a refreshing long drink. Its herbal notes complement the recipe, while a lemon peel and a short rosemary sprig link the garnish to the gin's citrus and herbal character. Keep the rosemary small: too much would cover the more delicate lavender and marjoram. A measured addition of tonic preserves the detail of the botanicals, and the lemon peel gives a fresh scent as the drink is raised to the nose.
