Iwai Gin takes its name from the Japanese word for celebration and is presented by Nozawa Onsen Distillery as a gin for the changing harvest seasons. At 42% ABV, it brings together Meyer lemon from Kumamoto, Japanese plum and cherry leaves. The distillery describes its character as fruity and floral, with applewood among the aromas.
Citrus · Floral · Fruity
The Meyer lemon is noted for a delicate sweetness and a rounded, orange-like warmth. Plums from a small orchard in Nakano, Nagano, add juicy fruit and a gentle natural sweetness. Cherry leaves contribute the familiar, almond-like aroma associated with sakura confectionery, while applewood gives the nose a soft orchard nuance. Juniper keeps these seasonal ingredients grounded in a recognisable gin profile.
On the nose, citrus and orchard fruit arrive together, followed by a gentle floral note.
The palate is supple rather than sharp: lemon brings freshness, plum gives a ripe middle, and the cherry-leaf character lingers with a delicate, sweet-herbal quality. The finish stays clean and lightly aromatic. At 42%, Iwai has enough presence for a classic gin and tonic while remaining easy to enjoy over ice.
For the Perfect ServePerfect serveThe way the producer recommends serving the gin (glass, tonic, ratio, garnish) to show it at its best.Glossary, follow the distillery's 3:12 ratio: fill a balloon glassCopa glassA large stemmed balloon glass, popularised by the Spanish gin and tonic: it stays cold for longer and gathers the aromas above the drink.Glossary with ice, add 3 cl of Iwai Gin and 12 cl of 1724 Tonic Water, stir gently and add a thin lemon wheel. The clean 1724 tonic preserves the balance between the citrus and the softer plum notes, and the measured dilutionDilutionThe water added by melting ice. In the right amount it opens the aromas and softens the alcohol; too much flattens the drink.Glossary keeps the fruit in focus rather than burying it under excess bitterness. The lemon garnish links the drink to the bright opening of the gin.
