OSUZU GIN Kumquat puts Miyazaki-grown kumquat at the centre of a Japanese craft gin made by Osuzuyama Distillery. Bottled at 45% ABV, it redistils the distillery's Yamaneko base spirit with four botanicals: juniper, kumquat, sansho and ginger.
Citrus · Spicy
The fruit brings both peel and flesh to the aromatic picture. Kumquat is naturally more layered than a simple sweet-orange note, combining bright citrus with a gentle pith-like bitterness. Juniper gives the nose and palate the familiar resinousResinousAn aroma reminiscent of pine or fir resin. It is juniper's signature, due to compounds such as pinene.Glossary frame expected of gin, while sansho contributes a distinctive Japanese pepper character. Ginger adds warmth and a clean, lively edge. Together these ingredients keep the citrus vivid without turning the drink into a sweet fruit spirit.
The choice of base spirit is part of the gin's identity. Osuzuyama Distillery is known for traditionally crafted shochu, and its Yamaneko spirit is the base for this Kumquat bottling. Rather than loading the recipe with many secondary botanicals, the distillery uses juniper, sansho and ginger to support the locally sourced fruit. The result is a compact recipe in which each named element has a discernible purpose and the kumquat remains the leading flavour.
At 45% ABV, OSUZU GIN Kumquat has enough concentration for a simple long drink.
