Violet and lilac appear first on the nose, with the dry, woody impression of cedar and a note of raw oats.
On the palate, orange and grapefruit bring a brighter edge, recalling the grapefruit of the base gin; cinnamon and cardamom warm the middle, and French vanilla rounds off the finish. The oak gives the texture a polished, mellow quality, while the juniperJuniperThe one compulsory botanical: gin must taste predominantly of juniper. Its "berry" is really a small conifer cone, resinous and peppery.Glossary underneath keeps the spirit recognisably a gin. The lavender of the Aromatic Gin finds an echo in the violet and lilac notes.
This is a gin for slow sipping rather than a busy mixer. Neat or over one large cube, it gives the floral and cask notes time to emerge, and a little water opens the vanilla. A long drink is possible if the tonic is kept short, but strong or sweet mixers would quickly cover the details that set this release apart. Its oak and spice also suit an Old Fashioned-style drink with a dash of bittersBittersHighly concentrated bitters (Angostura, orange…), added in dashes to season a cocktail.Glossary. Only 875 bottles were made, which makes it a gin to open for a special occasion.
