The 154th Open Special Edition Gin

London Dry Gin · 43 % ABV · GB-SCT

For the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, Ben Lomond created a limited edition Scottish gin and became the tournament's official gin. The recipe uses botanicals chosen from around the course: sweet blackcurrant berries, floral wild chamomile and the lemony tang of sorrel, alongside juniper. It is bottled at 43% ABV in 70 cl, with a white and green label that carries the Open's emblem and the words Royal Birkdale.

Royal Birkdale, a links among the coastal dunes of Southport, hosted the 154th Open in 2026, and the distillery drew on the landscape and character of the links for this release. Blackcurrant brings fruit, chamomile a soft floral note and sorrel a bright, tart edge, while juniper keeps the gin within a classic dry style. Stocks are limited, as befits a commemorative bottling. The label also gives the coordinates of Ben Lomond, the mountain above Loch Lomond that names the brand: 56°11′25″ N, 4°37′59″ W.

According to the distillery, the nose opens with the bold scent of a fresh citrus base, enriched by dry herbal notes.

The palate is wild and well rounded, with a bright burst of juniper and a refreshing hint of orange. The finish turns sweet and floral, balanced by a burst of refreshing citrus, which is where the chamomile and blackcurrant show most clearly; served neat, the chamomile also softens the juniper.

The official serve is the Solstice Sling, created by the bartender Branford Edgar, which combines the gin with caramelised honeydew melon, basil cordial, lime juice, coconut rum and ginger beer, garnished with fresh basil. For something simpler, a gin and tonic with a single blackcurrant and a small edible chamomile flower echoes the recipe without hiding the juniper.
