Papaiti Gin combines ripe pear, kawakawa leaf and nutmeg with juniper in Orchard Gin, distilled in Whanganui on New Zealand's North Island. The short recipe brings together a fruit, a native leaf and a warm spice around the botanical that defines gin. The gin is sold in 70 cl bottles at 42% ABV, and the recipe is deliberately short, so each ingredient is easy to pick out.

The distillery describes the result as crisp juniper with ripe pear, warm kawakawa and a dusting of nutmeg, and sums up its character as nostalgic, grounding and just a little bit wild. Pear gives the gin its orchard name and a soft, juicy sweetness. Kawakawa, a heart-shaped native leaf long valued in Māori medicine, adds a warm, slightly peppery and minty note, while nutmeg rounds the finish with a gentle spice. Kawakawa is related to the kava plant of the Pacific and has a distinctive peppery taste.
Juniper keeps the profile dry, so the pear reads as fresh fruit rather than as a sweet liqueur. The kawakawa gives a green warmth in the middle of the palate, and the nutmeg lingers on the finish. Tasted neat and lightly chilled, the pear comes first; with ice, the kawakawa and the spice become easier to pick out, and the finish stays gentle rather than sharp.
Papaiti suggests three ways to serve it. The classic gin and tonic uses a slice of dried lemon. A Pear Smash pairs the gin with soda water and rosemary, which picks up the green, herbal side of the kawakawa, while the English Garden version adds cucumber and mint for a fresher, lighter drink. For a simple start, a thin slice of pear alongside the dried lemon echoes the fruit in the recipe. All three drinks keep the gin at the centre and avoid heavy syrups.
