Outer takes its name from outer space. Outer Spirits, a Spanish producer, built the gin on three astrobotanicals, juniper, coriander and angelica, chosen because they are among the plants able to grow, or close to growing, aboard the International Space Station. The steel bottle, shaped like a small drum, nods to a material widely used in spaceflight, and the label carries the motto Beyond Imagination. It holds 70 cl at 40% vol., and even the name is printed in a plain typewriter-style font, in keeping with the technical, almost laboratory look of the design.
Citrus · Dry
The minimalism is intentional. With only three botanicals, the gin keeps to the classic backbone of the category, the resinous juniper, the citrus spice of coriander and the dry, earthy note of angelica, and leaves out everything else. The project looks to the future with the stated dream of one day producing gin in space, but the liquid itself stays firmly in the dry style.
The producer's tasting notes describe a balanced, gourmand nose, with floral and anise touches that evolve into herbal and citrus aromas.
On the palate the entry is refined, with a refreshing note reminiscent of lemon peel and fresh herbs, softened by a light anise sweetness. The finish is long, with a subtle bitterness that comes from the angelica and keeps the gin from feeling sweet.
Outer recommends a neutral tonic with no added or artificial flavours, so that the three botanicals remain easy to follow. Build it over large ice with a generous pour of chilled Indian tonic, then grate or twist a little fresh lemon peel over the top for aroma. The same restraint suits a dry Martini made with a very dry vermouth, where a lemon twist is the only garnish needed.
