Frodon English Garden Gin Description

A racehorse gave this gin its name. Frodon carried Bryony Frost to the first Grade 1 win by a female jockey at the Cheltenham Festival and to a King George VI in 2020, and Steeplechase Distillery built this English garden recipe around that partnership, releasing it to mark Women's History Month. It is filled at 42% ABV.

Juniper, spruce, rosemary, sage, thyme and green apple make up the list. The herbs are the point: rosemary and thyme give the fresh, familiar garden scent, sage adds a savoury edge that most gins avoid, and spruce reinforces the resinous side of the juniper rather than standing apart from it. Green apple is the only fruit, and it keeps the whole thing from turning into a herb infusion. The World Gin Awards named it England's best contemporary style gin in 2023, and the judges wrote of an elegant floral aroma with light pine and a cubeb-like spice on the close.

Juniper brings the first dry, resinous note, with spruce just behind it. Rosemary, sage and thyme are easy to name in the glass, the sage lending depth to the brighter thyme. Green apple adds a crisp fruit note without sweetness, the herbs fill the middle, and the finish stays dry with a herbal trail after the fruit has gone. Tasted neat, spruce and rosemary dominate; a little dilution brings the apple forward.

A straightforward gin and tonic suits it: large ice, a clean chilled mixer, one thin slice of green apple and a short rosemary sprig among the cubes. Keep the rosemary small so it does not cover the sage and thyme, which are the more interesting half of the recipe. Taste it neat before mixing to find the spruce, then let the tonic lift the apple. The drink stays crisp and herbal, with just enough fruit to soften a dry finish.
