Lemon twistA fifty-litre oak cask gives Branderiet Navy Strength Fadlageret its golden colour and its dry finish. After several months of maturation the Danish distillery bottles it at 58.5% ABV in a 50cl bottle, and suggests drinking it neat or with a favourite tonic.
Navy Strength describes power, not a flavouring. The term goes back to the sailors of the nineteenth century, who judged a spirit by testing whether gunpowder soaked in it would still ignite; anything below roughly 57% failed. This bottling therefore carries far more alcohol than a standard gin, and the cask adds a woody layer over the juniper, rosemary, pepper and almond character of the house recipe.
Brande, in central Jutland, is home to the whole operation: a garage-sized distillery producing gin, whisky and snaps in very short runs, with heath juniper and clean local water as constants. The Navy Fadlageret is the strongest bottle in the gin range and the one that asks for the most attention when pouring, since a heavy hand changes the balance quickly. It also stands apart from the flavoured gins the house is better known for locally, where blackcurrant, rhubarb or elderflower lead the recipe.
Dilution matters here, so measure carefully. Take 4cl of gin over large ice cubes, add 10cl of Indian tonic water, cold, and finish with a lemon twist squeezed over the surface. The peel gives a clean citrus lift without sugar, and the mixer makes the strength approachable. Taste before topping up: at a restrained dilution the oak and the dry finish are far easier to follow, and the gin keeps the weight that justifies its 58.5% label. Neat, in a small glass and at room temperature, it remains the most direct way to meet the cask.
