Dog and Spoon London Dry Gin Description

Tony Brindle and Seb Michaud founded Dog and Spoon in Alfreton, Derbyshire, in 2019, and their London Dry Gin followed in 2021 as the distillery's flagship. It is distilled from a grain base with eleven botanicals and bottled at 40% ABV.

Juniper leads, supported by lemon peel, orange peel, lemon verbena, bay leaves, cardamom, nutmeg and cassia. Verbena reinforces the citrus with a softer, herbal lemon tone, bay adds a dry green note and the three spices give the base some warmth. None of these ingredients is unusual on its own, but together they draw a clear sequence from fresh peel to savoury leaf and gentle spice.

The distillery describes aromas of juniper, citrus and cardamom with subtle herbaceous notes. On the palate juniper and citrus come first, with cardamom and lemon verbena underneath, and the finish turns to dry bay and a soft touch of cassia and nutmeg. The spice stays measured, so the citrus is never pushed aside. The gin earned two stars at the Great Taste Awards 2022, and its stronger sibling, Miner's Strength, was named best in the High ABV category by The Gin Guide Awards that year.

Sustainability is part of the distillery's identity: Dog and Spoon was certified carbon neutral in 2022 and relies on solar panels, closed-loop cooling, botanicals grown on site and plastic-free packaging. The drinking suggestions are simple: a gin and tonic garnished with lemon, rosemary or both, or a Negroni, a Martini or an Elderflower Collins. An Indian tonic suits the juniper, a twist of lemon lifts the verbena, and rosemary echoes the herbal side of the bay. Bay leaf, more familiar in the kitchen than in gin, gives the finish its savoury, slightly camphor-like dryness.
