English Heritage Grapefruit & Pomelo Gin Description

The formal gardens of Wrest Park, cultivated in the nineteenth century by their owner Thomas Robinson, 2nd Earl de Grey, inspired the label of this gin. It belongs to The English Heritage Spirits Collection, three gins launched in March 2026 by The Wiltshire Distilling Company together with the conservation charity, and it is sold at 40% ABV in 70 cl bottles and 5 cl miniatures. The Wiltshire Distilling Company works from a Grade II listed barn on the Fonthill Estate, in the south-west of Wiltshire.

The recipe pairs two large citrus fruits, pomelo and grapefruit, with juniper, coriander, lemon, orris root and pink pepper. The distillery describes zesty pomelo and sunny grapefruit bursting across the palate, lifted by juniper, coriander, lemon and orris root, with pink pepper adding a playful warmth before a refreshing finish.

The two fruits complement each other. Pomelo, the largest of all citrus fruits and one of the ancestors of the grapefruit, has thick pith and sweet, mild flesh, while grapefruit brings sharper acidity and a pleasant bitterness. Pomelo is native to South and Southeast Asia, where it is often eaten fresh. Juniper and coriander give the gin its dry, spicy frame, orris root binds the aromas together, and pink pepper, softer than black pepper, adds a gentle, fragrant heat.

Wrest Park, in Bedfordshire, is one of the sites in the care of English Heritage, and its formal gardens are among its great attractions. Mixed with a delicate tonic, the drink keeps the balance between juicy fruit and bitter peel, and a thin wedge of grapefruit echoes the fruit on the palate. A few pink peppercorns, crushed lightly over the drink, bring the spice back to the nose.
