Fresh salicornia, the sea asparagus that grows on salt marshes, gives Poseidon its natural salinity. The Sea is Life, the Italian brand behind the gin, set out to celebrate the ocean without exploiting it, and part of the proceeds supports Sea Shepherd Italia and its work to protect the seas. The brand sees itself as a custodian of the sea rather than a mere observer, and the gin carries the name of the Greek god of the sea.

Four traditional botanicals form the aromatic core: juniper, angelica, coriander and cardamom. Italian citrus, including sweet orange, lemon, mandarin and pink grapefruit, adds freshness, and the salicornia brings a savoury, maritime edge to what the brand calls a savory and luminous journey. The botanicals are sourced in Italy, and the gin comes in 700 ml bottles at 45% ABV. Salicornia, also called samphire or glasswort, has long been gathered along Mediterranean coasts and eaten fresh or pickled.

Even the bottle speaks of the sea. Its rings are inspired by coral formations scanned from real seafloors and converted into digital form, creating a tactile ocean design without taking anything from the reefs. A limited Whale Shark edition opens a series dedicated to different marine species, with the aim of raising awareness and supporting their protection.

In 2024 the World Gin Awards gave the gin Gold and the Classic Italy title, while the London Spirits Awards added a second top medal and the IWSC a Bronze. Salicornia and citrus suit a dry, light tonic: pour it over plenty of ice and add a strip of mandarin zest, whose sweet oils meet the salty note on the nose. The same freshness makes Poseidon a good choice for a Martini with a green olive or a caper berry.
