Pennington's Lakeland Moon Ramblers Gin Description

Ramblers Gin is named after the walks behind its recipe: the Pennington's team forages wild juniper berries and elderflower while rambling on the Lake District fells around the distillery. Those local botanicals are then paired with Calabrian bergamot and sweet Sicilian mandarin peel, and small batches of the gin are distilled in a traditional copper still.

Pennington's describes Ramblers as a London Dry Gin that is light, refreshing and very drinkable. It is bottled at 40% ABV and sold as a 70 cl bottle or a 5 cl miniature, and it joins the Lakeland Moon family, whose original gin is made with wild juniper and other botanicals gathered under a full moon. The same Kendal distillery also produces a Lakeland Moon Elderflower edition.

The two sides of the recipe work together. Wild juniper brings a resinous, piney backbone and elderflower a soft, floral sweetness, while Calabrian bergamot, best known from Earl Grey tea, adds a perfumed bitterness and mandarin a rounder, juicier citrus note. The result links the fells of Cumbria to the Mediterranean in one glass, with the foraged ingredients giving the gin a clear sense of place. Calabria is the main growing region for bergamot, while Sicily is famous for its fragrant mandarins.

The distillery pairs the gin with its own Rambler's G&T, presented as ideal after a long day of rambling in the Lakes. At home, a light tonic lets the bergamot and elderflower show, and a twist of mandarin or orange peel repeats the citrus of the recipe. Elderflower blooms in early summer, which makes Ramblers an obvious choice for a long, cool drink after a walk on a long June evening. Foragers usually pick the blossoms on a dry, sunny morning, when they are fully open and at their most fragrant.
