Hernö Sloe Gin Description

Hernö Sloe Gin begins with ripe organic sloes and the distillery's dry gin. The fruit rests with the spirit for three months before the batch is sweetened and bottled at 30% vol. Production is limited to roughly 1,800 bottles per batch, giving this Swedish sloe gin a clearly defined seasonal identity.

The aroma recalls freshly crushed dark berries, with a tart edge that keeps the fruit from becoming heavy. Juniper from the underlying gin remains present behind the sloes, adding a dry, resinous line to the sweeter fragrance. The texture is rounder than a conventional dry gin yet retains enough freshness to avoid the feel of a simple liqueur.

On the palate, the first impression is juicy and gently sweet, followed by the sharper character of sloe skin and stone fruit. A mild spice and the dry base spirit give the middle of the sip more structure. The finish returns to dark fruit, with a faint almond-like nuance and a measured sweetness.

It can be enjoyed neat, but a restrained gin and tonic also suits its balance. Indian tonic, a lemon peel and a few sloe berries preserve the fruit while bringing the dry gin base forward. Use plenty of clear ice and a modest tonic measure so the delicate berry character is not diluted.

The three-month resting period is important to the final balance: it allows colour, acidity and dark-fruit flavour to move into the spirit before sweetness is adjusted. That measured process explains why the result can work both as a short aperitif and in a longer drink without losing the dry outline of its gin base.
