Gil Torbato Italiano Description

Peat from the Sila mountains gives Gil Torbato Italiano a smoky identity rooted in Calabria rather than borrowed from whisky imagery alone. Vecchio Magazzino Doganale combines that peat with low-altitude juniper and bottles the result at 43% ABV in a compact 50 cl format. The house applies its rural production philosophy to this concise pairing, allowing smoke, resin and local origin to carry the profile with striking clarity.

The aroma begins with dry juniper and an earthy, gently smoky layer. Pine, resin and warm soil are more prominent than sweet campfire notes. The peat broadens the base and gives the gin a mineral, slightly austere character, while the juniper keeps the upper register fresh. The appeal lies in the direct conversation between a classic gin botanical and a distinctly Calabrian source of smoke.

The palate is firm and dry. Juniper appears first, then the smoke grows through the middle and settles into a long earthy finish. At 43%, the alcohol gives the two ingredients enough definition without making the peat aggressive. It can be drunk neat or used in a Negroni or Martini. A small measure at room temperature is the clearest introduction, because neither ice nor tonic interrupts the gradual move from resin to smoke.

Pour 4 cl of Gil Torbato Italiano into a small tulip-shaped tasting glass at room temperature. Do not add ice or mixer. Place three juniper berries and a very short rosemary sprig in the glass, then repeat both on a dark plate beside it. This neat Perfect Serve lets the Sila peat finish develop at its own pace.
