Assensus Mandarin Gin Description

Assensus Mandarin Gin combines mandarin and juniper in a 43% Belgian gin with a bright, fruit-led profile. The distillery describes the palate as fresh, fruity and spicy, while keeping the complete herbal recipe private. Bottled in 70 cl, it contains no added colouring or preservatives. Its aim is simple: show the aromatic character of mandarin without losing the dry structure expected from gin.

Mandarin brings more than sweetness. Its peel gives fragrant oils, a soft bitterness and a rounder citrus tone than lemon or grapefruit. Juniper remains underneath with pine and resin, preventing the fruit from becoming loose or confectionery. The unpublished herbs contribute the spicy detail mentioned by the producer, but they should not be turned into an invented list. At 43%, the gin has enough concentration for the citrus to remain vivid after dilution.

The first impression is juicy and perfumed, followed by a drier middle where the juniper becomes clearer. Spice appears gradually rather than as heat, then the finish returns to fresh peel with a clean bitterness. Tasted neat, the mandarin oils give the texture a supple quality. A little cold water opens the zest further and makes the contrast between fruit, pine and spice easier to read.

The distillery recommends a neutral tonic for its strongly flavoured gins. Build the drink with 4 cl of Assensus Mandarin Gin, 10 cl of Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water and plenty of clear ice. Add a thin mandarin wheel and a strip of mandarin peel to the glass, then repeat both garnishes on a small dish beside it. This restrained presentation keeps the published mandarin-and-juniper balance in focus.
