Navy Strength Rock Rose Gin is the 57% ABV navy-strength version of Rock Rose Gin, produced by Dunnet Bay Distillers in Caithness, on the far north coast of mainland Scotland. The Rock Rose identity is closely tied to the local landscape and to Rhodiola rosea, the plant also known as rose root or rock rose. In this higher-strength bottling, the profile is not simply louder: the increased ABV pushes the pine, berry and root notes into sharper relief while keeping the gin rooted in the same northern botanical character.

The recipe is centred on juniper, wild blueberries, rowan berries, hawthorn, angelica root, orris root and Rhodiola rosea. Juniper gives the opening a strong, warm pine character, reinforced by the higher proof. Wild blueberries, rowan and hawthorn form the berry-led middle of the palate, bringing a darker fruit register rather than obvious sweetness. Angelica and orris bring the deeper earthy notes that become more visible at navy strength, while Rhodiola rosea adds a delicate floral note connected to the name and identity of Rock Rose.

On the nose, the gin opens with a pronounced pine release from the juniper, followed by a lemon sherbet brightness that keeps the first impression fresh despite the strength. The fruit does not appear as a soft red-fruit sweetness; it is bolder and wilder, closer to dark berries, hedgerow fruit and rowan. The aromatic structure feels compact and powerful, with the alcohol carrying the botanicals rather than masking them.

The palate is assertive, but the best reading of the gin comes through progression rather than impact alone. Juniper starts the tasting with dry pine and resin, then the middle of the mouth fills with blaeberry-like wild blueberry, rowan and hawthorn. These berry notes give substance and colour to the gin without moving it into liqueur territory. The finish turns toward angelica and orris, bringing dryness, earthiness and a root-like depth. Navy Strength Rock Rose Gin is strong enough to drink neat or over ice in a small measure, where dilution gradually opens the juniper, berries and roots. In a gin and tonic, the serve should stay restrained: a neutral or Mediterranean tonic, clear ice and a wedge of pink grapefruit are enough. Pink grapefruit works because it echoes the citrus brightness already present in the nose and gives lift to the berry and earthy finish. The gin also has the concentration for a Negroni, where its berry depth, spice and high strength can stand up to bitter and sweet components.
