Citadelle Bajan Description

Citadelle Bajan was created in Barbados through a collaboration between Citadelle and the historic Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery. Part of Citadelle's limited Les Excentriques series, it combines the house's juniper-led approach with botanicals closely associated with the island: fresh pink grapefruit, hibiscus known locally as sorrel, bay leaf and lemongrass. Bottled at 41.4% ABV, the gin carries a clear Barbadian identity while remaining recognisably dry, structured and suited to classic gin service.

Pink grapefruit leads the nose with juicy freshness and a fine bitter edge. Hibiscus follows with a bright floral note and a gentle suggestion of red fruit, while lemongrass sharpens the aromatic line. Bay leaf brings a drier herbal depth beneath the citrus. On the palate, the texture is round and silky, but the grapefruit keeps the centre lively. Juniper provides the necessary backbone and the finish extends through citrus peel, aromatic herbs and a lingering touch of floral tartness.

The gin's appeal lies in the precision of this balance. Its Caribbean character is immediately apparent, yet the recipe avoids excessive sweetness and does not blur the distinction between gin and a fruit-flavoured liqueur. Grapefruit supplies both freshness and bitterness, sorrel adds colour to the aroma, and the bay leaf with lemongrass gives the finish definition. The 41.4% strength preserves that detail in a long drink and gives lighter cocktails enough botanical presence.

For the GinToLove Perfect Serve, fill a chilled balloon glass with clear ice, pour 4 cl of Citadelle Bajan and add 10 cl of Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water. Stir gently, then garnish with pink grapefruit peel and a small strip of lemongrass. Express the grapefruit oils above the glass without squeezing juice into the drink, and keep the lemongrass intact rather than muddling it. The tonic's bitterness reinforces the dry side of the gin while allowing its floral and citrus notes to remain bright.

Use the lemongrass as an aromatic accent rather than a stirrer, and avoid crushing it. Pink grapefruit lifts the citrus oils, while the clean bitterness of the tonic keeps the hibiscus, bay leaf and juniper precise as the ice begins to dilute the drink.
