Makar Oak Aged Gin Description

Makar Oak Aged Gin takes the juniper-led structure of Makar Original Dry Gin and matures it for a short period in small handmade 50-litre virgin European oak casks. The official product page places the maturation at the centre of the gin's identity: the oak gives a golden colour, a vibrant woody taste and a spicy finish. Bottled at 43% ABV, it keeps the same botanical backbone as Makar Original Dry while moving the drinking moment toward richer, warmer serves.

The confirmed botanicals remain juniper berries, fresh rosemary, fresh lemon, cassia bark, black pepper, coriander seeds, liquorice and angelica root. The cask does not replace those botanicals; it reframes them. Fresh pine and rosemary meet smoky oak, lemon citrus becomes softer, and spice gains depth through the interaction with new European oak. Official tasting notes mention soft baked vanilla, warm spices and cinnamon on the nose, followed by bonfire toffee, soft juniper, herbaceous vanilla, coffee and dark chocolate impressions on the palate.

The result is a barrel-aged gin with clear gin DNA. Juniper still speaks first, but the oak adds warmth, colour and texture. The mouthfeel is rounder than Makar Original Dry, with pepper and cassia carrying the finish. The woody character is prominent, yet the lemon and rosemary keep the gin from becoming heavy. It is especially interesting for drinkers who enjoy cask influence but still want botanicals to remain visible.

Makar states that Oak Aged Gin is best paired with ginger ale over ice rather than conventional tonic water, and also suits a Negroni. A wedge of fresh lime is the official garnish, bringing acidity against the oak and spice. For a long serve, use plenty of ice, ginger ale and a restrained lime wedge. The aim is to let the oak, juniper, spice and citrus stay in balance, not to cover them with sweetness.
