Makar Mulberry Aged Gin Description

Makar Mulberry Aged Gin is a Scottish cask-aged gin from The Glasgow Distillery Company, bottled at 43% ABV. It takes Makar Original Dry Gin and matures it for 10 weeks in bespoke 50-litre virgin mulberry wood casks. The official product page describes this wood-led ageing as the defining feature, giving the gin a light straw colour, a smooth and subtly sweet taste and a lemony citrus finish. Mulberry here refers to the cask wood, not to a mulberry fruit infusion.

The botanical base remains the Makar dry recipe: juniper berries, fresh lemon, fresh rosemary, cassia bark, black pepper, coriander seeds, liquorice and angelica root. The mulberry wood cask adds a different kind of warmth from oak. It keeps the gin pale and bright, but adds a softer texture, a faint fruit-wood impression and a gentler sweetness on the tongue. Official notes mention cassia spice with a fruity charred wood aroma on the nose, then waxy lemon, vanilla, white chocolate, juniper and anise on the palate.

The tasting profile is more delicate than a dark barrel-aged gin. Juniper remains present, lemon gives the main lift, and the wood brings smoothness rather than heavy toast. The finish is very smooth, with sweet lemon, light pepper and fresh spice. This makes Makar Mulberry Aged Gin especially useful for drinkers who want cask maturity but do not want the gin to lose freshness or botanical precision.

The official serving advice allows it neat, over a cube of ice, or with ginger ale rather than conventional tonic water. A wedge of fresh lime is the listed garnish. In a long serve, ginger ale gives warmth and gentle sparkle, while lime cuts through the softer wood and lemon notes. Use plenty of ice and keep the garnish clean: the point is to show the unusual mulberry cask and the Makar botanical base without making the drink too sweet.

This follows the official preference for ginger ale and keeps the lime sharp enough to balance the soft mulberry-wood ageing.
