Isle of Raasay Gin Description

Isle of Raasay Gin is shaped by one small island rather than by a broad Scottish cliché. Distilled and bottled on Raasay, it places local juniper beside rhubarb root, lemon peel, orange peel, coriander, angelica, liquorice, orris and cubeb pepper. A small portion of double-distilled Raasay spirit is folded into the recipe, giving the gin an extra link to the distillery's whisky work without turning it into a cask-led or malt-heavy spirit.

The aroma starts dry and bright, with juniper needles, lemon zest and a cleaner orange lift. Rhubarb adds a tart edge that keeps the citrus lively instead of sweet, while cubeb pepper brings a fine, slightly resinous spice. On the palate, the gin has more grip than its clear colour suggests: citrus opens the first sip, then coriander and angelica tighten the middle before liquorice and orris give the finish a longer, drier line. At 46% ABV, dilution releases the herbal side without flattening the spice.

A precise gin and tonic suits it best. Use a neutral premium tonic or a Mediterranean tonic at a measured ratio, then garnish with orange peel and a slim ribbon of rhubarb when available. The orange connects with the peel in the recipe; the rhubarb garnish underlines the dry tartness that makes the gin distinctive. It also works in a Martini with a restrained citrus twist, where cubeb and juniper can speak without being covered by sugar.

For GinToLove, the interest is the balance between island specificity and classic gin structure. Raasay juniper gives the name more than a geographical label, while the citrus, root botanicals and cubeb make the tasting coherent and easy to recommend.

Orange peel lifts the citrus botanicals while rhubarb underlines the dry tart edge. Keep the tonic measured so the cubeb pepper and juniper stay present.
