Orkney Barrel Aged Navy Strength Gin Description

Orkney Barrel Aged Navy Strength Gin is a cask-led bottle with unusual intensity. The gin spends five years maturing in ruby port and bourbon casks before blending, then is bottled at 59% ABV. The confirmed botanical base is deliberately kept simple here: juniper remains the certain anchor, while the ageing vessels supply colour, depth and the richer flavours that separate it from a clear navy strength gin.

The nose should be read through the meeting of juniper and wood. Juniper gives the dry pine frame; ruby port casks suggest darker fruit, wine sweetness and a reddish warmth; bourbon casks bring vanilla-toned oak, spice and a rounder texture. On the palate, the high strength gives immediate weight, but the cask work changes the rhythm. Instead of a purely sharp botanical attack, the gin moves from dry juniper to oak spice, then towards a longer finish where port fruit and bourbon wood add depth. It remains a gin, not a whisky substitute, because juniper still defines the line.

A long tonic serve can work, but it needs restraint. Use 4 cl with 8 cl of Indian tonic over very cold ice, then garnish with orange peel. The orange lifts the cask richness and keeps the drink from becoming heavy. For cocktail use, this gin is better in short formats: a Martinez-style serve, a barrel-aged Negroni variation or a sipping gin over ice with a small orange twist.

Its value on GinToLove is clear: it speaks to whisky drinkers without abandoning gin drinkers. Five years of maturation, ruby port, bourbon and 59% ABV make it a serious bottle, but the best reading remains botanical first, cask second.

Orange lifts the port and bourbon cask richness, while the shorter tonic ratio keeps the wood and high-strength juniper concentrated.
