Garnish
Orange SliceThe Botanist Cask Rested Gin begins with the botanical character of The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, then spends at least six months resting in selected casks. Bottled at 46% ABV, it remains a gin first, but the wood adds another register: citrus becomes softer, spice becomes warmer and juniper takes on a more rounded shape.
The cask influence is controlled rather than dominant. Oak brings gentle vanilla-toned warmth and a light toasted quality, while the botanical core retains its herbs, citrus and floral detail. This brief maturation gives the gin a more autumnal profile without removing the freshness that identifies the Islay recipe.
On the palate, candied citrus, warming spice and perfumed juniper meet a subtle oak frame. The wood adds texture and length, not a heavy whisky character. The finish is dry and gently spiced, with citrus peel and botanical notes returning after the cask's softer opening.
It is particularly rewarding served neat in a small glass, or over one large cube when a little dilution is wanted. A wide orange peel works well because it brings out the citrus already present in the gin and cask. For a long drink, keep the tonic dry and use it sparingly so the rested character remains visible.
Cask Rested Gin offers a bridge between a botanical dry gin and a lightly matured spirit. It suits slow tasting, but retains enough juniper and freshness to remain versatile behind the bar. Its short maturation is most convincing when the serve is quiet and unhurried, allowing the cask notes to complement rather than dominate the botanicals.
