Gin Jos'Berri Description

Gin Jos'Berri is a French distilled gin from Distillerie Jos Nusbaumer, bottled at 45% ABV in Steige, in the Vosges mountains of Alsace. The name Jos'Berri means Joseph's mountain in Alsatian and directly honours Joseph Nusbaumer, founder of the distillery and a man closely associated by the house with plants, biodiversity and distillation. The distillery itself was founded in 1947 and remains rooted in the Val de Ville, a historic Alsatian distilling area where mountain water, altitude and botanical diversity form part of its production identity.

Jos'Berri is presented as a mountain gin rather than a conventional citrus-led gin. It is made from a long maceration of around twenty plants, botanicals, wild berries and spices in neutral alcohol for three weeks, at a moderate strength intended to preserve the aromatic quality of the ingredients. After distillation, the gin is stored in the distillery's cellar, reduced to bottling strength with Steige spring water naturally filtered through Vosges schist, then cold-filtered before bottling. This process gives the gin a botanical density that is clearly linked to the distillery's plant-based savoir-faire.

The named tasting markers give a precise reading of the profile. Fennel, verbena, lemon balm and dill shape the nose with a vegetal, aromatic and lightly aniseed freshness. Juniper remains central on the palate, bringing a resinous gin structure rather than letting the herbal materials dominate completely. Ginseng, ginger, gentian and liquorice develop the root-driven side of the recipe, adding bitterness, warmth, earthiness and a measured sweet-bitter depth. The profile is therefore less about fruit or citrus than about mountain herbs, roots, spice and a dry botanical frame.

On the nose, Gin Jos'Berri opens with green herbs, fennel and lemon balm, followed by a more complex aromatic impression that can recall verbena, dill and a subtle curried spice register. On the palate, juniper gives firmness first, then the root botanicals bring texture and depth. Ginger adds movement, gentian introduces a clean bitter line, and liquorice softens the finish without making the gin sweet. The final impression is long, acidulated and aniseed-led, with a slight vegetal salinity noted in competition tasting notes.

Gin Jos'Berri received a Silver medal at the World Gin Awards 2025 in the Contemporary Style Gin category. It can be tasted neat as an aperitif or digestif, where its herbal and root-like structure is easier to observe, but it also works in a gin and tonic or a long drink. A neutral Indian tonic, clear ice and a restrained garnish such as lemon peel or a small fennel frond keep the service aligned with the gin's aromatic identity without masking its dry mountain character.
