Black Fox Oaked Gin

Barrel-Aged Gin · 46 % ABV · CA

Black Fox Oaked Gin is a barrel-aged Canadian gin from Black Fox Farm & Distillery in Saskatchewan. Bottled at 46% ABV, it is matured in virgin American white oak, giving the spirit a distinctly different path from the distillery's clear gins. The oak is not a decorative detail: it brings colour, depth and a broader palate to a juniper-based spirit. Black Fox's Oaked Gin was named World's Best Cask Gin in 2017, a recognition tied to this particular wood-matured style.

Woody · Spicy · Earthy

Virgin American white oak contributes the warm, woody side of the gin. Its influence can be read in the amber colour, in the rounder texture and in the spice-and-wood accents that accompany juniper. The botanical recipe is not presented as a full public list, so the gin is best understood through what is clearly established: a juniper foundation developed through contact with new oak, rather than a whisky-like spirit presented as gin in name only.

The nose brings juniper into a warmer register, with toasted wood and gentle sweet-spice impressions around it.

On the palate, the higher strength gives a firm, concentrated structure. Oak broadens the middle of the mouth and leaves a dry woody line through the finish, while juniper keeps the gin identity visible. The result is more contemplative than a light citrus gin, with enough intensity to hold its shape over ice or in a spirit-forward cocktail.

Black Fox Oaked Gin rewards a simple serve: taste it neat in a small glass, or over one large cube, before adding a mixer. In a gin and tonic, choose a restrained tonic and an orange peel so the wood remains legible. It is also at home in a Negroni or a Martinez-style cocktail, where its barrel character can sit naturally beside vermouth and bitters without disappearing.

Use slightly less tonic than for a light dry gin. The shorter ratio preserves the barrel-aged gin's amber, woody character, while orange peel adds brightness without competing with the oak and juniper.
