Cinnamon-Sugar Candied Orange SliceGin-U-Wine is a one-off winter release from Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery in Australia. Bottled at 40% ABV in 500 ml format, the release is limited to fewer than three hundred bottles and is not planned for a second batch. Its idea is unusually direct: a gin is distilled from a recipe of juniper, clove, orange, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla, then brought down to strength with a wild-fermented Nero d'Avola red wine from Witches Falls on Tamborine Mountain rather than with water alone.
That construction gives the gin a distinctly wine-led character without losing its botanical structure. Juniper holds the spirit in gin territory, while clove, cinnamon and cardamom establish a warm spice frame. Orange brings a rounded citrus note and vanilla softens the aromatic edges. The Nero d'Avola component contributes depth, a red-fruit impression and a bittersweet line that recalls mulled wine more than a conventional gin and tonic.
The nose centres on stewed berry pie and sweet baking spice. In the mouth, cooked berry notes arrive first, followed by cinnamon, clove and cardamom warmth. The wine element gives the texture extra weight and a spirit-forward, gently bittersweet shape, while vanilla keeps the spices from becoming austere. The finish is long, warm and clearly spiced, with orange and dark-fruit character carrying the last impression.
Gin-U-Wine is best approached as a slow winter pour. Granddad Jack's recommends 30 ml over one large ice cube with a cinnamon-sugar candied orange slice, a serve that underlines the orange and baking-spice profile without adding a mixer. It also suits warming serves with cloudy apple, orange, cinnamon and star anise, or a more restrained after-dinner pour over ice when its red-wine depth can take centre stage.
