Isle of Harris Tidal Strength Gin Description

Isle of Harris Tidal Strength Gin is a higher-strength expression of Isle of Harris Gin, distilled on the Isle of Harris in Scotland's Outer Hebrides and bottled at 49.5% ABV. Launched in July 2025 for global travel retail, it represents the distillery's first exploration of its established gin at a significantly higher bottling strength. The intention is not to create a different botanical identity, but to reveal the familiar Harris profile with greater aromatic intensity, additional dryness and a more forceful maritime character.

The recipe retains the nine botanicals associated with Isle of Harris Gin: juniper berries, coriander seeds, cubeb berries, cassia bark, angelica root, bitter orange peel, orris root, liquorice root and locally harvested sugar kelp. Sugar kelp is the ingredient most closely connected to the island. It is sustainably hand-harvested from sea lochs around the Outer Hebrides and gives the gin its characteristic dry maritime accent. The remaining botanicals provide the classical framework of juniper, citrus, roots and spice around this coastal element.

The gin is distilled in small batches in Tarbert on the Isle of Harris. Its higher 49.5% strength changes the balance of an otherwise familiar aromatic structure. According to the distillery, the additional alcohol brings greater dryness from the juniper and makes the fruit and floral notes more prominent, while also increasing the overall intensity of the spice and maritime character. This makes Tidal Strength notably more assertive than the regular 45% Isle of Harris Gin without abandoning the style of the original.

On the nose, juniper is firm and dry, accompanied by fresh citrus and a bracing coastal impression. Bitter orange contributes brightness, while coriander and the other botanicals add fruit, floral and green aromatic details. The sugar kelp does not turn the gin overtly salty; instead it reinforces the sensation of sea air and gives the profile a dry mineral quality. Cubeb and cassia bring additional spice around the edges.

On the palate, Tidal Strength is fresh, concentrated and structured. Juniper leads with more dryness than in the standard bottling, followed by stronger fruit and floral aromatics. Citrus keeps the profile lively, while the roots and spices provide depth. The maritime element remains clearly present and gives the gin a distinctive sense of place. The finish is persistent, citrus-led and lightly spicy, with a sweet liquorice nuance appearing alongside the coastal freshness.

The distillery developed Tidal Strength with spirit-forward classic cocktails particularly in mind, especially the Martini. Its official Tidal Martini combines 50 ml of Tidal Strength Gin with 10 ml of dry vermouth, 5 ml of olive brine, sushi nori and a few drops of sugar kelp aromatic water. The higher strength also makes it suitable for a very dry gin and tonic where a restrained tonic allows the juniper, citrus and maritime botanicals to remain at the centre of the drink.

Instructions

To honor the bold maritime character of Isle of Harris Tidal Strength Gin, begin by selecting a highball glass to accommodate its robust 49.5% ABV.

Fill the glass with large, solid ice cubes to maintain a slow dilution rate, preserving the gin's intensified botanical complexity.

Pour 5 cl of the gin over the ice, allowing its citrus and floral notes to emerge.

Top with 15 cl of East Imperial Yuzu Tonic Water; the yuzu's bright citrus profile complements the gin's bitter orange peel and grapefruit elements, while its subtle sweetness balances the gin's dry, spicy finish.

Garnish with a thin slice of dehydrated grapefruit, enhancing the citrus aroma and adding a visual nod to the gin's coastal origins.

For alternative pairings, consider Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water or Fentimans Pink Grapefruit Tonic Water.
