Boatyard Double Gin Description

Boatyard Double Gin is a dry gin produced by Boatyard Distillery on the shores of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The distillery is based at Tullybay Marina, near Enniskillen, and presents itself as Fermanagh's first legal distillery since 1890. This sense of place is central to the gin: Boatyard works with a clean, juniper-forward style, but also uses sweet gale harvested from the founder's family farm, linking the recipe to the landscape around the distillery.

The gin is made from organically produced wheat spirit and macerated for 18 hours with eight botanicals. The botanical selection is compact and classical, but with a local accent. Juniper berries provide the central structure, coriander seed adds dry spice and citrus lift, angelica root and orris root give depth and binding structure, liquorice root brings gentle roundness, grains of paradise add warmth, and lemon peel gives the gin its bright citrus edge. Sweet gale is the most distinctive local botanical, adding a green, herbal and slightly resinous note.

The name Double Gin refers to the way juniper is used during production. Juniper is brought into contact with the spirit at both the beginning and the end of the process, increasing the sense of depth around the gin's most important botanical. This is not a fruit-led or decorative style of gin. Its identity is built around clarity, juniper intensity, citrus freshness and a dry botanical frame.

On the nose, Boatyard Double Gin is immediately juniper-led, with piney and resinous notes supported by fresh lemon peel. Coriander and grains of paradise add a discreet spicy lift, while sweet gale gives a leafy, slightly wild herbal impression. The aromatic profile remains clean and precise, with citrus and green herbs sitting around a firm dry gin core.

On the palate, the gin is dry, structured and assertive without feeling heavy. Juniper arrives first, followed by zesty lemon peel and the dry spice of coriander. Angelica and orris give the middle of the palate a more grounded texture, while liquorice root adds a subtle sweetness that rounds the profile without making it sweet. Sweet gale and grains of paradise extend the finish with herbal, peppery and gently earthy notes.

The finish is long, dry and botanical, marked by juniper, citrus peel, green herbs and light spice. At 46% ABV, Boatyard Double Gin has enough strength for a clean gin and tonic, but it also works well in a Dry Martini where its juniper, citrus and herbal structure can remain fully visible. In a gin and tonic, a good Indian tonic water and a lemon garnish are coherent choices, especially because fresh lemon peel is part of the recipe itself.

London Essence Grapefruit & Rosemary Tonic Water extends Boatyard's lemon peel, sweet gale and dry juniper backbone without making the drink sweet. Grapefruit adds fresh bitterness, while rosemary reinforces the green herbal side of the gin.
