Masahiro Okinawa Gin Recipe 02 Description

Tankan, an Okinawan citrus, is the fruit that separates Recipe 02 from its sibling. The awamori heritage of Masahiro Distillery is still the base, but the aromatic argument has changed: mint, cloves, moon peach, ginger and lemongrass surround the tankan alongside juniper, and the result is brighter and warmer where Recipe 01 is bitter and green. The range strength of 47% ABV is unchanged, so nothing here feels soft.

Tankan peel and sweet citrus oil open the nose with fresh lemongrass close behind. Mint lifts the top, ginger snaps warm underneath, and cloves lay down a darker spice that anchors the fruit. Moon peach - Alpinia zerumbet - threads a tropical herbal nuance between the citrus and the spice, joining two registers that could otherwise sit apart. The palate begins juicy, with citrus and awamori texture together, then moves through fresh herbs into ginger and clove. Juniper never disappears and holds the whole thing dry, but the personality on show is Okinawan fruit and warm spice. The clove in particular does more work than its quantity suggests, giving the fruit somewhere to rest.

The mixer should be clean and not too floral, since the botanical list already supplies plenty of aromatic material. A plain citrus twist reinforces the tankan without sugaring it, and mint can echo the recipe if used with real restraint - a single leaf, not a bouquet. A soda highball with a small zest is equally convincing because it leaves the tankan and lemongrass fully exposed. Ginger, clove and mint return once the fruit has moved on, in a long and openly spicy close. Dilution needs attention: at this strength and this aromatic density, a loud garnish or a heavy tonic will take over the glass.

The goal is to keep the tankan, lemongrass and spice readable. Grapefruit supports the citrus, mint echoes the botanical list, and the tonic should stay crisp enough to handle the gin's 47% strength.
