Masahiro Okinawa Gin Recipe 02 Description

Masahiro Okinawa Gin Recipe 02 is the citrus-forward companion to Recipe 01, still based on Masahiro Distillery's awamori heritage but built around a different Okinawan aromatic idea. The key fruit here is tankan, a local citrus variety, supported by mint, cloves, moon peach, ginger and lemongrass alongside juniper. The gin keeps the 47% ABV strength of the range, so it feels lively and structured rather than soft. It is less bitter-green than Recipe 01 and more immediately bright, spicy and aromatic.

The nose opens with tankan peel, sweet citrus oil and fresh lemongrass. Mint adds lift, ginger brings a warm snap, and cloves give a darker spice that sits underneath the fruit. Moon peach, also known as Alpinia zerumbet, contributes a tropical herbal nuance that links the citrus and spice together. On the palate, the first impression is juicy citrus and awamori texture, followed by fresh herbs, ginger and clove. Juniper stays present enough to keep the gin dry, but the personality is clearly Okinawan citrus and warm spice.

For a perfect serve, Recipe 02 likes a tonic that is clean and not too floral. Grapefruit peel reinforces the citrus without making the drink sugary, while mint can echo the botanical list if used sparingly. A soda highball with a small citrus garnish also works well because it lets the tankan and lemongrass remain clear. The finish is long, zesty and spicy, with ginger, clove and mint returning after the citrus. It is a vivid, generous gin that still needs careful dilution, because its high strength and aromatic density can dominate a glass if the garnish or mixer is too loud.

The goal is to keep the tankan, lemongrass and spice readable. Grapefruit supports the citrus, mint echoes the botanical list, and the tonic should stay crisp enough to handle the gin's 47% strength.
