Komasa Sakurajima Komikan Gin Description

Komasa Sakurajima Komikan Gin is a Japanese dry gin from Komasa Jyozo in Kagoshima, built around one very clear local signature: the tiny Sakurajima komikan orange. The distillery uses a rice shochu base, then adds juniper, coriander seed and komikan peel to create a gin that is deliberately concise rather than crowded with botanicals. This focus gives the spirit a precise identity. It is a citrus gin, but not in a generic lemon-and-orange way; the komikan brings a small, bright, mandarin-like fruit note with a fine peel bitterness.

The nose opens with fresh citrus peel, soft mandarin and clean juniper. Coriander seed adds a dry spice that keeps the fruit from becoming too rounded, while the shochu base gives the texture a subtle grain and rice smoothness. On the palate, the gin is bright and direct. The komikan is the leading note, moving between sweet peel, fresh juice and a gentle bitter edge. Juniper remains present enough to keep the gin dry, and the coriander seed adds a light spice through the middle of the mouth.

At 45% ABV, Komasa Sakurajima Komikan Gin has good structure for a gin and tonic, especially with a neutral tonic that lets the citrus speak clearly. A grapefruit peel, a small mandarin peel or a simple orange zest will work better than heavy fruit slices. The finish is clean, citrusy and lightly bitter, with the rice base adding smoothness rather than sweetness. It is a very readable gin: focused, local, aromatic and refreshing, with enough dryness to satisfy classic gin drinkers and enough fruit clarity to make a simple highball feel distinctive.

This gin is naturally vibrant and mandarin-led, so keep the serve clean and dry. A restrained tonic preserves the creamy citrus character while the grapefruit peel adds lift without muting the Komikan’s sweetness.
