Thin Rhubarb RibbonFlavored Gin · 40 % ABV · BE
The label asks for a sweet tonic, contradicting almost every other gin instruction ever printed. That is not carelessness: the recipe is built on vanilla, cinnamon and star anise, and a bone-dry mixer would strip exactly the register the bottle exists to deliver. Raven Spirits made the Antwerp edition to be comforting rather than crisp, at 40%.
Spicy · Fruity · Vanilla
Vanilla arrives first and does the most work, laying a gentle sweetness across the top that is aromatic rather than sugary. Cinnamon and star anise follow with warmth and depth, one dry and woody and the other sweeter and more perfumed, and between them they build the spiced core the whole thing turns on. Rhubarb is the corrective. Its mild tartness contrasts with the vanilla directly and keeps the sweetness from settling, and it also supplies the brightness. Juniper stays in the background, supporting the structure without competing, which is a deliberate demotion in a recipe where the spices are meant to lead.
The palate is round and approachable, rhubarb against vanilla, cinnamon and anise warming the middle, and the texture smooth throughout. The finish lingers on gentle spice and a restrained sweetness that never turns into syrup.
Follow the instruction. A sweet tonic, rhubarb or raspberry as garnish, and a star anise pod floated on top: all three reinforce what is already in the glass. Most gins ask you to protect them from sugar. This one asks for a little and knows exactly why, which is a more confident position than the default. A bottle built to be comforting rather than sharp has to say so on the label, because a drinker following the usual rules will strip it by accident and then conclude that the gin itself was thin.
