Best enjoyed with Thomas Henry Tonic Water, garnished with Cucumber slice and Rosemary sprig.
See the perfect serveSicilian lemon is what has been added, and adding a citrus rather than another flower is what sets this apart within the series. Sunspell belongs to the Cabinet of Curiosities, the limited releases Lesley Gracie builds on the house signature, and it takes its subject from the sunsets seen over Ailsa Craig from the distillery at Girvan. Bottled at 43.4%.
The signature is still underneath and still recognisable. Cucumber essence gives the palate its cool watery texture, rose petals the perfumed lift, and juniper with coriander, angelica and orris root holds the classical structure exactly where it always sits. What changes is above them. Sicilian lemon peel arrives bright and oily rather than merely sour, the oil in the skin carrying an aromatic quality that juice never has, and it sets a top considerably sharper than the house style usually allows. Hibiscus pushes back with a tart floral character carrying a faint red-fruit edge, and the pair of them together are what produce the warm glow the bottle is named for: sharp above, soft beneath, with gentle spices filling the space between.
Bright and floral together take a mixer that stays quiet. Ice the glass first, then a neutral tonic, then the house garnish of a cucumber slice, which follows the signature rather than the addition. Lemon peel is the alternative and follows the new half instead. Nothing sweetened, which the hibiscus would immediately turn into cordial. Adding one ingredient and leaving the rest alone is the most restrained thing a limited edition can do, and the easiest to judge. The house style is defined enough that one addition registers as a whole new bottle, which is either an advantage or a trap depending on the addition. Sunsets are a well-worn subject for a label; the lemon is what stops this one being only that. It ends citric, floral and bright.
