Jonge Bols Description

The difference between jonge and oude genever is not a question of age but of recipe: jonge carries less malt wine, which makes it lighter and far less grain-heavy than the older style. Bols has been distilling since 1575, and this is the house reading of that younger category, built from malted grain spirit with juniper and a selection of botanicals, bottled at 35% ABV.

The lightness here is a deliberate design choice rather than any kind of shortcoming. The malted grain gives a subtle cereal character that never once dominates, and juniper sits clearly above it, green and dry, positioned much closer to the front than it would be in an oude bottling. The herbal register fills the middle without carrying much weight at all, while an earthy note runs beneath the whole thing and gives the palate somewhere to rest. The texture is smooth and quite light, and the drink finishes clean rather than long. Set beside an oude genever, everything here is turned down by a shade, and that restraint is precisely what makes the bottle so easy to work with.

Versatility is the argument this bottle makes. A jonge genever behaves in a cocktail far more like a gin than an oude does, which makes it a natural substitute in a Collins, a Fizz or anything citrus-led, while still contributing a grain softness that no London Dry can offer. Served cold and unmixed in a small glass, the traditional way, it reads gentler still and the malt becomes considerably clearer. Mixed long, it asks for a plain tonic and a lemon twist and nothing whatever beyond that. Genever is often treated as a historical curiosity rather than as a working spirit; the jonge style is the strongest argument against that. It ends herbal, earthy and clean.
