Yu Gin

Distilled Gin · 43 % ABV · FR

The tingling arrives before the spice does. Sichuan pepper works on the tongue rather than on the palate, producing a light buzzing sensation unrelated to heat of any kind, and pairing it with yuzu is a deliberate move: the pepper carries its own citrus character, so the two reinforce each other instead of pulling apart. Spiritique makes Yu Gin in France at 43%.

Citrus · Spicy · Herbal

Yuzu is the loudest element and the reason the gin exists. Its aroma is sharper and more perfumed than a lemon, with a distinct bitterness in the peel that no other citrus quite matches, and it opens the nose vividly. The Sichuan pepper then adds lift and tension above it, aromatic rather than pungent, which is the right description for a spice most people expect to burn and which does not. Underneath, the recipe is conventional and quietly done: juniper holds a clear backbone, coriander seed brings a warm and faintly citric spice that bridges the two halves, and liquorice rounds the texture with a soft sweetness that keeps the dry structure from turning austere.

The palate is crisp and well defined. Juniper first, then the yuzu brightness with its refined acidity, then the pepper building progressively into that gentle buzz. The finish is clean and persistent, citrus zest and a light spice trailing.

Neutral tonic and a deeply chilled glass let both halves speak; a flavoured mixer will cover the pepper before it covers anything else. Keep the garnish minimal. It suits simple cocktails where precision matters more than complexity. Two ingredients from opposite ends of a trade route, chosen because they overlap rather than because they contrast, is a quieter idea than most Japanese-influenced gins attempt, and a harder one to get right.

Instructions

In a highball glass, place a large ice sphere to maintain a slow dilution, preserving the integrity of Yu Gin's 43% ABV.

Pour 5 cl of Yu Gin over the ice, allowing its citrus and spicy notes to unfold.

Top with 15 cl of Fentimans Valencian Orange Tonic Water, chosen for its vibrant citrus profile that complements the yuzu and Sichuan pepper in the gin.

Gently stir to integrate the flavors.

Garnish with a thin slice of fresh yuzu, if available, or a lemon twist to enhance the citrus aroma.

For alternative tonic pairings, consider Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water, East Imperial Yuzu Tonic, or Thomas Henry Botanical Tonic.
